I'd check compression first before spending any more money and time on that tdi. There's a good chance it bent some rods from eating all that oil.

There's $1800 worst case. New trans + differential is $2400, so $600 more. Rebuilding one ads up fast. Especially if ...

Why not just buy a new one from VW? You should be able to get a new one for around $1500. I dunno, I've been down the crap used transmission road. Ended up costing me more than if I just bought a new one and put an LSD in it.

Yeah, you def want a 5hp 80 gallon if you really want to paint.
