My budget is low, and I want to experience the bus in it's OG-glory which is why I've decided the Grilled Cheese Van needs to remain aircooled. I need something that will be reliable on long trips.
I'm open to suggestions too as I'm an A/C noob.
I have lots of MK2/MK3 stuff for trade.

Excellent.
So...no motor at all, or is the one in it worn out and toasty? 1600's can be rebuilt on the cheap. And I may have some motor bearings in my stash if you are rebuilding.
Speaking of that...I love grilled cheese.

Still need to dig in. Gotta clear out the garage first. I was told it has top end issues, so I assume its missing a valve or two.

If it's valves it's a side end issue.

You can pick up a set of heads for a few hundred bucks. Check on the Samba.

I got my rebuilt single port heads from Bugpatch for under $300 shipped. That guys been building heads forever. Regarding valves, VW recommended you replace your exhaust valves every 40k miles, they are made in two pieces and have a tendency to separate with age.
Also I have a couple books on building aircooled engines and some of the specialty tools.
