This car was just smogged and registered this month in Phoenix, AZ metro. It's not pretty but is an excellent foundation for someone to finish paint and fine detail work. This is not a good car for you if you are not either independently wealthy with lots of patience and/or experienced with interactive EFI tuning, mk2's, and a separate daily driver. I've put around 5k miles on the swap including 1300 miles towing a loaded trailer over mountain passes and high altitudes; this is a strong runner. You could add a turbo to this setup for less than $2g in parts and have a very fast car.
Car:
1992 GTi originally a Mexican built 16v with 170k miles; new cluster shows around 217k.
This was previously a CA branded salvage title; I have the AZ title in hand.
Powertrain:
Current engine: 2004 Jetta GLi 2.8L 24v VR6, BDF code, 95k miles
Current Transmission: 1994 Corrado SLC VR6, CDM code, unknown miles, new cup seals
Full standalone engine management driving OEM coilpacks through MSNS-E on high resolution code with 2.5bar map sensor (aching for forced induction), OEM intake change-over valve and VVT solenoids programmable.
Sachs clutch; new
Passat VR6 Radiator; new
DBC OBD2 VR6 Throttle body
Turn 2 front lower mount, new stock oem vr6 mounts elsewhere
GHL 2.5" catback exhaust
Magnaflow Hi-Flow cat; new
Techtonics Tuning dual stainless downpipe; new
Empi axles; new
Air conditioning:
The system needs a compressor and two new mk2 control relays. The compressor is noisy and the control relays are corroded from age and often stick open when the AC is activated. The compressor is a standard 12v VR6 unit. The entire system has new o-rings and vacuum leak down tested with 29in/hg which is excellent.
Interior:
Stock 16v interior with Jetta GLi power Recaros (power not hooked up currently; wires need to be routed from the fuse panel).
No stereo but dash and rear shelf speakers are present.
Dash has lots of cracks.
MK3 VR6 bubble cluster; functioning MFA except for MPG
New kamei golf ball shift knob
Passat 16v 4 spoke steering wheel
No shift boot
ebrake handle leather cover shows wear
Carpets are above average in condition
Headliner fabric is gone; foam needs repair and recovering.
Door panels are average
Innovate LC-1 Wideband display in center console cubby
Dash lights changed to Red LED with inverted polarity display similar to OEM Audi
Passat VR6 AC Evaporator in MK2 HVAC box
Exterior:
Maaco had their hands on this at one point and the exterior needs full attention as a result. The weather stripping shows signs of over spray; there is bondo in the front passenger fender and some bondo work to cover dings are outside the car.
The front frame rails were straightened professionally and I have the spec sheet showing the delta for different areas.
The windshield is severely cracked and will need to be replaced; DPS will stop you for this type of crack and they already have one written warning on record.
New OEM quad round grill in dealership box is included in the asking price.
There is minor surface rust in the engine bay near the battery tray and underneath both headlights.
There are nutsert holes on top of both strut towers that indicate someone with a Neuspeed or Eurosport fetish accessorized this sweet ride once.
New CURT MNFG hidden receiver hitch 5 to 4 wire w/converter box.
Smoked crystal clear headlights (the 5" inners have not been installed yet)
Suspension:
Rokkor coilovers with trimmed rear bump stops; new
MK3 front K-frame with new control arm bushings
MK2 control arms
MK3 front sway bar
MK2 axles
MK3 10.4" front brakes
MK2 OEM rear disc brakes
15" steel wheels
195-50-15 Hankook RS2 tires; 65%-80% tread remaining
My current To-do List:
-R&R headliner
-New passenger fender (I don't like bondo on an easily removable, cheap body part)
-Exterior Paint
-Add stereo system
-Tachometer circuit repair; the tachometer does not currently work but I have multiples of the replacement components. I will be looking at this if time allows. If I don't have a chance to fix this then I'll knock $100 off the sale price.
-Replace the aftermarket radiator fans; the fans are new and work fine but are of cheap quality. The low-speed fan is noisy and often mistaken for a supercharger.
-Upgrade engine mounts; the stock mounts are too mushy and you'll notice the drivetrain slop when shifting and accelerating rapidly.
-Flush and change brake fluid (1992 vintage in there I suspect).
-Replace windshield
-Replace windshield wiper motor (pops fuse, inoperable)
-Replace driver's side door window guide (replacement in hand)
-Replace FUBA mast
That's about all I can think of now. I try to include as many details as I can so there are no surprises. I'll be happy to take additional photos if anyone would like to see certain areas. Here's a link to the build thread that may provide additional information as well:
