So my sister is looking in to getting a 2000 Beetle. I think it has the 2.0l in it. Is there any issues or concerns with these cars that I should look for when I go take a look at it? Let me know. Thanks

I've heard of electrical problems on VW's from 99-02, but... i've never seen that actual problem, and an ex of mine owned a beetle, and I never noticed any problems other than things she did to the car

But other than that, I'd say you'd be fine. But, why a beetle!??! If you're going beetle, go air cooled/old school! Or tell her to woman up and get A Golf of some sort. :)

Golf does not have the spot for the flower on the dash.

Oh, but you can fabricate one. Personally, I wouldn't do the sunflower that all beetle's do. I'd do something like VINES for a golf.. or possibly just weeds. Makes it look like it will eat you and spit you out.

She doesn't have a lot of cash and she wants the beetle. What can I say. A least she will have a euro car. :) Well maybe it is in Butte. Is anyone in close to Butte that could take a look at it for me? It is at the Mile High dealership.

So what are the cooling issues? Are they simple radiator replacement or is it bad head gaskets. I have heard that there is a ground issues. Let me know so my sister doesn't but a junker.

I had a 2.0L Jetta for a few years. Bought it with 68K and sold it with just short of 140K. My cousin bought it and is still driving it.

I don't know much about the Beetle itself, but the 2.0, properly maintained, will probably outlast the body.

It is a fantastic motor, the 2L 8V has been around FOREVER. The only issue I had was the coolant flange, which I had to change twice because it slowly leaked G12. (I made a DIY for changing it viewtopic.php?f=55&t=142 and you can find it on the Vortex in the 2.0L DIY page http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2970825). I take most of the blame for the second replacement because I didn't buy the OEM flange, and bought the EUROMAX brand from ECS. Anyway, I changed the flange the second time with the OEM version when I replaced my clutch.

Change the timing belt, tensions and H2o pump at 80K intervals and you will have strong dependable motor for a long time.
