The enemy of brake fluid is moisture. We have a meter at my shop that has green, yellow, red light to indicate the percentage of moisture. As far as "filter wrenchs" goes, there are a few different styles....I like the ones that you attach to a rachet.

Chris' Custom VW in Spokane is not far from you and they can rebuild or supply parts, possibly cheaper than you can get there. Shipping can be arranged.

The #1 cause of a check engine light, just after getting gas, with the car running good is the gas cap. Either you did not get it on all the way, something got under the seal, or the cap needs replacement.

At least 10% of the check engine lights I've scanned were for the gas cap!!!
